Publication life cycle / General notes

Foreword: "The present work has been built up on the basis of a short essay contributed to Eschatology, Occasional Paper N. 2, of the Scottish Journal of Theology. The request to publish the essay in German (Evangelische Theologie, July 1954) and in French (Les Réformateurs et la fin des temps, 1955) has encouraged me to offer in this enlarged form a discussion of the relation of eschatology to the life of the Church as found in the works of Luther, Butzer and Calvin.... "Dedicated to Ernst Wolf and Otto Weber of the University of Göttingen in appreciation for their work for a closer understanding between the Lutheran and Reformed Churches."

Abstract

From later edition: In this book, T. F. Torrance’s doctrine of “the vicarious humanity of Christ” addresses the problem of the reality of salvation. Through this approach, salvation as humanization is affirmed, yet without the problems of anthropocentric theologies. This book is unique in that it offers both a survey of contemporary Christian thinking on salvation as well as a constructive alternative based on Torrance’s doctrine, a significant yet neglected contribution to modern theology.
