Publication life cycle / General notes

The Didsbury Lectures, given at Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, England, in 1994. The lectures delivered there were the basis for the four numbered chapters.

Published simultaneously in the UK and US. This is the first American edition. Chapter descriptions are provided here instead of for the first UK edition.

Different pagination in the UK edition (xi, 115 pp.; #1996-JBT-6, Paternoster, UK), than in this American edition #1996-JBT-7 (130 pp.).

In the Preface, Torrance explains: "As offered here, they are a slightly expanded form of the lectures I gave in Manchester, with an introduction and an appendix on human language for God. They incorporate material from lectures I have given in colleges and summer schools in different countries in recent years, some of which I have published in articles elsewhere: The Forgotten Trinity in the British Council of Churches trilogy [#1991-JBT-1a]; on 'The Place of Jesus Christ in Worship' in the Church Service Society Annual 1970 [#1970-JBT-1], reprinted in The Theological Foundations for Ministry, ed. Ray S. Anderson, 1979, T&T Clark and Eerdmans [#1979-JBT-1], also in 'Doctrine and Practice of Public Worship in the Reformed Churches,' the Report of the Committee on Public Worship and Aids to Devotion to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, 1971 [#1971-JBT-1]; and on 'The Vicarious Humanity of Christ' in The Incarnation, ed. T. F. Torrance, 1981, Handsel Press [#1998-JBT-1]." (pp. 10-11)

Abstract

Back cover:

Here is a book that sets our worship, communion, and language of God back on track.

In a day when refinement of method and quality of experience are the guiding lights for many Christians, James Torrance points us to the indispensable "who" of worship, the triune God of grace. "Worship is the gift of participating through the Spirit in the incarnate Son's communion with the Father," writes Torrance.

This book explodes the notion that the doctrine of the Trinity may be indispensable for the creed but remote from life and worship. Firmly rooted in Scripture and theology, alive with pastoral counsel and anecdote, Torrance's work shows us just why real trinitarian theology is the very fiber of Christian confession.
