Before Transcribing

  • listen to the audio on normal speed
  • try to anticipate some of the potential problems or difficulties you may have (unfamiliar dialogue, accent, etc.)
  • look over the information sheets about the person (look at pictures, keep their humanity foremost in mind)
  • there is no need to get bogged down with rules, just start
  • insert asterisks where you know there's a problem to come back to later
  • look at the style guide to gain a basic familiarity
  • create a word list of unfamiliar terms or names you might encounter
  • anticipate what shortcuts might be helpful to create
  • think of purpose and preservation of the project
  • each transcription is different, prepare for new challenges if you're beginning another one
