Four "volumes" were published in 13 tomes or bound volumes (or "Parts"), from 1956-1975. The 4 "volumes" are devoted to: Revelation, God, Creation, and Reconciliation. Barth did not live to complete the planed 5th "volume" on Redemption, so only 4 “volumes” were published in all, usually indicated by Roman numerals. As they were completed, each “volume” proved too long to publish in a single tome, so they were issued in separately-bound “Parts,” indicated as a slash or a point followed by an Arabic numeral. Thus, “CD II.1” or "CD II/1" indicates the Church Dogmatics, Volume II, Part 1, which would be the 3rd bound volume in the printed collected set. Vol. 2 was first printed in 1956. Vol. 1 appeared in 1975 as the 2d ed.
