Publication life cycle / General notes

Barth’s Kirchliche Dogmatik was published in 13 bound volumes from 1932 to 1967. The Kirchliche Dogmatik was organized into four "volumes" devoted to Revelation, God, Creation, and Reconciliation. Barth did not live to complete the planed 5th "volume" on Redemption, so only 4 "volumes" were published in all. These organizational units, confusingly called "volumes," are usually indicated by Roman numerals, to distinguish them from the bound volumes. As each organizational unit was completed, it proved too lengthy to publish in a single bound volume, so they were issued in separately-bound "Parts," indicated as a slash or a point followed by an Arabic numeral. Thus,  "II.1" or "CD II/1" indicates the Church Dogmatics, Volume II, Part 1, which would be the 3rd bound volume in the printed collected set.

Barth’s 13 bound volumes of German text were translated into English from 1956-1975 under the editorial leadership of Thomas F. Torrance and G. W. Bromiley (Edinburgh: T&T Clark, 1936-1977). Vol. 2 was first printed in 1956. A revised Vol. 1 appeared in 1975 as the 2d ed.

A 14th volume contains short paragraph descriptions of each section; Scripture, name, and subject indices; and weekly sermon ideas with Scriptures for the church year according to the lectionary.
