While Transcribing

  • With each change of speaker, create a new paragraph. Begin each paragraph with a timestamp followed by the speaker's name (spelled out), in italics, like this:
    • #00:00:44-0# Jennifer Floether: I was born and brought up in Edinburgh.
    • Note: You can use the speaker's initials if you like, and later do a search-and-replace to insert the full name.
  • Adjust preferred setting (spool time, volume, etc.) — don’t be discouraged if it takes a while to find the settings that work best for you
  • Use the comments to make notes of difficulties/questions you have while transcribing
  • Choose a symbol (such as an asterisk) to denote sections of the transcription that you would like to return to and revise — be consistent
  • Create shortcuts as needed
  • Follow the Style Guide as much as possible (there will be plenty of editing to follow after the transcript is complete).
  • In the Style Guide, two of the most helpful pages are likely those on "Paragraph Transitions" and "Interruptions/Overlapping/Unintelligible Speech."
  • Expect to iterate; you won't get it perfect the first or second times through
  • Returning to basics is okay and expected
  • You can learn from others (other transcription projects — both your own and what other people have done)
