Torrance, Thomas F. "Preface." In James Clerk Maxwell, A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field, with An Appreciation by Albert Einstein, edited by Thomas F. Torrance, ix-xiii. Edinburgh: Scottish Academic Press, 1982; #1982-399a
Maxwell's address to the Royal Society of London (1864) was published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1865 (v. 155). It was reprinted in The Scientific Papers of James Clerk Maxwell, edited by W. D. Niven, in 1890. This is its first separate publication. Instead of modernizing the text to correspond to post-Einsteinian terminology, Torrance explained that he "retained the language he used at each stage of his advance." Einstein's appreciation is newly translated for this edition.
