Abstract

Thomas F. Torrance gave a great deal of attention to Calvin throughout his own theological work, without ever being a “Calvinist” in the narrow sense. The article explores his first extended published study of Calvin, Calvin’s Doctrine of Man (1949) and analyzes in particular Torrance’s report in his preface of how he has studied, read and interpreted Calvin. This can be seen as an important key to his attitude and relationship to Calvin throughout his theological career.
