This essay explores the restoring of relations between the Protestant churches in Germany, Europe and America following World War II, with special attention to the events surrounding the Stuttgart Declaration. Questions regarding the relation between forgiveness and repentance are considered along with their connection to the political issues of collective responsibility, punishment and the eventual restoration of Germany following the Nazi era. The essay examines the ways in which the Stuttgart Declaration and its chief interpreter, Martin Niemöller, played a valuable role in helping both Germany and the Allies move towards postwar reconciliation.
